Driving Test Show Me Tell Me Questions

🚗 About the ‘Tell Me / Show Me’ Questions

The examiner will ask you one:

  • ‘Tell me’ question at the start of the test (explain how to check something)
  • ‘Show me’ question while driving (physically show how you operate something)

📝 ‘Tell Me’ Questions

1. Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
The brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Test them as you move off — the car should not pull to one side.

2. Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
Use the manufacturer’s guide. Check using a reliable pressure gauge when tyres are cold, and don’t forget the spare tyre.

3. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted.
The rigid part should be at least as high as the eyes or the top of the ears, and as close to the back of your head as is comfortable.

4. Tell me how you’d check tyres have enough tread and are safe to use.
No cuts or bulges. Minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the middle ž of the tyre all the way around.

5. Tell me how you’d check headlights and tail lights are working.
Turn them on (ignition may need to be on) then walk around the vehicle to check.

6. Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with the anti-lock braking system (ABS).
A warning light will appear on the dashboard if there is a fault.

7. Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working.
Operate the indicators (or hazard lights) and walk around the vehicle to check they flash.

8. Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working.
Press the brake pedal and look for reflections in windows/doors, or ask someone to check for you.

9. Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
After you start the engine, the steering should feel light and easy to turn.
If it feels heavy or stiff, the system may not be working.

10. Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you’d use them.
Turn on dipped headlights, then the fog light switch. A warning light will show. Use only when visibility is seriously reduced.

11. Tell me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and how you’d know main beam is on.
Operate the main beam switch. A blue warning light shows when main beam is on.

12. Open the bonnet – tell me how you’d check the engine has enough oil.
Identify the dipstick, remove and wipe it, reinsert and check the level between the minimum and maximum marks.

13. Open the bonnet – tell me how you’d check coolant level.
Find the tank, check the level is between the min and max markings. Only top up when the engine is cool.

14. Open the bonnet – tell me how you’d check brake fluid level.
Identify the reservoir and ensure the level is between the high and low marks.
